Escapism: The Comfort of Distraction
About this Session
A session for exploring escapism, avoidance, and the places we go when life feels overwhelming.
Sometimes we all need a break from reality.
We lose ourselves in books, television, video games, social media, work, daydreaming, travel, sleep, or endless scrolling. Escapism can offer comfort, creativity, and much-needed relief. But sometimes the places we escape to become places we hide, making it harder to face the emotions, relationships, or realities waiting for us.
In this session, we’ll explore our relationship with escapism without judgment. What are we trying to step away from? What are we hoping to find? When does escapism help us recharge, and when does it become a way of avoiding ourselves?
Together, we’ll reflect on the ways we seek comfort, distraction, and relief, and how we can create space for both healthy escape and intentional presence. We’ll talk about burnout, emotional avoidance, fantasy, procrastination, digital habits, and the human need to occasionally step outside of everyday life.
This isn’t a conversation about giving up the things that bring us joy. It’s about becoming more curious about why we turn to them and whether they’re helping us return to our lives feeling restored or simply delaying what needs our attention.
This session is for you if:
- You find yourself escaping into social media, TV, books, gaming, work, or other distractions
- You struggle to sit with difficult emotions or uncertainty
- You wonder whether your coping strategies are helping or hurting
- You often procrastinate or avoid things that feel overwhelming
- You crave rest but aren’t sure if you’re actually recharging
- You’re curious about finding a healthier balance between escape and presence
You don’t have to have all the answers—or stop escaping altogether—to belong here. Whether you’re looking for refuge, feeling stuck, or simply wondering what you’re really running toward or away from, this space is for you. 💛
About this Space
Anxiety & the Inner World is a space for exploring the emotions that live just beneath the surface: the spirals, the “what ifs,” the patterns we inherit, and the fears we carry quietly.
Here, we make room for sitting with the parts of ourselves that panic, overthink, and worry.
This space helps us slow down, notice our inner world without judgment, and build gentler ways of relating to ourselves and others.
How Does it Work?
This is an open, guided discussion led by your Keeper, Jesse. Each participant will have the opportunity to listen to and share experiences on anxiety, well-being, emotions, and whatever else comes up during the session.
When and How Do We Meet?
We meet digitally every couple of weeks to make participation easy for those with demanding schedules. Cameras are optional, and you’re welcome to join from wherever you are, even between shifts. We only ask that you find a private place to join or use headphones to help maintain the security of everyone present.
